Chicago White Sox closer Liam Hendriks underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, the team announced. Hendriks made a comeback to baseball this season after beating c, but will not be sidelined again.
The procedure was performed by Dr. Keith Meister at TMI Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington, Texas, the head team physician of the Texas Rangers. The recovery time is approximately 12 to 14 months, putting Hendriks likely out through next season.
The White Sox placed Hendriks on the 15-day IL on June 11 with right elbow inflammation after making an appearance on June 9. He did not feature in a game since joining the IL.
Hendriks only appeared in five games this season with a 2-0 record and 5.40 ERA and one save.
He publicly announced his battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January and shared he was cancer free on April 20. Hendriks made his season debut on May 29 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Hendriks was awarded the Jimmy V Award for perseverance at last month's ESPYs. He told USA TODAY Sports prior to the ESPYS that he was "very honored" to be given the award and hopes it raises awareness for cancer research.
