Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine ahead.
Hugh Jackman is willing to be the butt of the joke.
After all, the Deadpool & Wolverine star allowed his personal life to become a punchline in the new Marvel film, which he stars in alongside Ryan Reynolds.
As Ryan’s character Deadpool introduces Wolverine in the film, he seemingly pokes fun at Hugh’s separation from estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness.
“He’s usually shirtless,” Deadpool quips in the film. “But he’s let himself go since the divorce.”
Since Wolverine’s love interest Kayla Silverfox hasn’t a big part of the films since 2009’s X-Men: Origins, Deadpool’s comment appears to break the fourth wall, and point to Hugh’s split his wife after 27 years of marriage, which was announced in September 2023.
“We have been blessed to share almost 3 decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage,” Hugh, 55, and Deborra, 68, said in a statement to People at the time. “Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.”
The former couple—who share kids Oscar, 23, and Ava, 19—also emphasized they would continue to happily co-parent their adult children.
“Our family has been and always will be our highest priority,” their statement continued. “We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition in all of our lives.”
And while the comment seemingly about Hugh’s IRL love life was enough to raise fans’ eyebrows, it certainly wasn’t the only poke at the actors’ real lives—and breakups. Indeed, Jennifer Garner who played Elektra opposite Ben Affleck’s Daredevil in the 2003 movie of the same name, makes a cameo and appears to make a subtle jab at her ex husband.
When Jennifer—with whom she shares kids Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 with Ben—makes her appearance, she tells Deadpool that Daredevil had died.
The devastating news is delivered casually from Elektra, who notes, “It’s fine.”
Obviously, the joke was all in good fun, as Jennifer has emphasized before how well she and Ben have been able to transition from a couple to co-parents.
"It's not Ben's job to make me happy," Jennifer explained to Vanity Fair in 2016 shortly after the former couple, who finalized their divorced in 2018, separated. "The main thing is these kids—and we're completely in line with what we hope for them."
