Nicole Kidman’s latest role will have you bewitched.
In the trailer for A24’s Babygirl—released on Oct. 1—things heat up and get dangerous for the Oscar winner’s CEO character Romy as she’s seduced by a young intern named Samuel (Harris Dickenson) who quickly charms his way into her life and they begin an affair that’s more than a little steamy.
After their chance meeting when Samuel stops a loose dog from attacking unsuspecting Romy, the pair are formally introduced when it is revealed that he has taken a position at her company—and she must mentor him. Things take a turn, as Romy and Samuel begin their sexy secret love affair under the noses of her husband, Jacob (Antonio Banderas), their daughter, and employees.
“If we’re gonna do this, we need to set some rules that you and I both agree on,” Samuel tells Romy. “Starting with, I tell you what to do and you do it.”
There’s an obvious change in the power dynamic and Romy is all for it until it becomes evident that Samuel could be using their relationship against her. Leaving her with no control and no choice but to be a “good girl.”
And after the film, directed by Halina Reijn, premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August, Nicole, 57, spoke about stepping into the role and how it’s like none she’s played before.
“This definitely leaves me exposed and vulnerable and frightened, and all of those things when it’s given to the world,” she told the audience via The Hollywood Reporter. “But making it with these people here, it was delicate and intimate and very, very deep.”
Nicole continued about taking the role, “I think that’s what made it so compelling, was being in the hands of Halina [as my director], because I knew she wasn’t going to exploit me. I mean, however anyone interprets it, I didn’t feel exploited. I felt very much a part of it. It’s the story that I wanted to be a part of, that I wanted to tell, and every part of me was committed to that.”
Babygirl hits theaters this Christmas.
